What Are Standard Pallet Dimensions, and Why Should I Avoid Them?

Posted by Sonoco Conitex Team on October 25,2022

It’s time to think outside standard pallet dimensions. Why? Let’s talk about the benefits of custom-made pallets. Spoiler alert: You may stand to benefit more than you think.

Pallets are intended to be versatile solutions to a series of different storage and shipping problems. A pallet protects your products, distributes weight, fends off forklift impacts, and helps safeguard your investment and your workers alike.

However, it only provides those benefits if it’s the right size. If your pallet is too wide or deep—even by a few inches—it won’t protect your pallet well. It’ll be difficult to maneuver in your most common spaces. If your pallet dimensions don’t allow for the most efficient packing strategy, you may even find yourself wasting money on freight or wasting space in storage.

For a tool that’s supposed to be helping you solve all of these problems, we think that these frustrations are unacceptable. Fortunately, they’re avoidable—particularly if you’re open to being creative when it comes to standard pallet dimensions.

In this article, we’ll go over your options for standard pallet dimensions and talk about an intriguing solution that could make your life a lot easier.

What are the standard pallet dimensions you need to know?

What are the dimensions of a standard pallet?

As you might expect, there are a couple of different sets of standard pallet dimensions. Here’s the nitty-gritty on the two most standard pallet sizes as popularized and standardized by a few different influential organizations:

  • Grocery Manufacturers of America pallet size: 48” x 40”; 6.5” tall

  • Euro pallet size: 1,200 mm x 800 mm 31.50” x 47.24”; 5.6” tall

Simple, right? You might even start to draw some general conclusions about the type of pallet most easily available in your area or most suited to your clients based on their location.

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Maybe putting yourself (and your product/processes) inside those defined dimensions just isn’t working for you. After all, while pallets might come in standard sizes, products and warehouses certainly don’t!

If you’re experiencing frustrations working within GMA or Euro pallet specifications, it may be time to think about custom pallets, which are just like what they sound: pallets that you can order and design that are customized to the size and shape of your warehouse, truck, product, or other precise specifications.

Here are some benefits of custom pallets:

  • Custom pallets can reduce dead space in container loads or truckloads by fitting the footprint of your products or goods more closely.

  • Custom pallets can create a more stable footprint for extremely fragile or heavy goods. They may also be better suited to protect and ship oddly shaped goods.

  • Custom pallets can be built to meet delivery destination requirements, work within cost considerations, or even be tailored to the type of transportation (e.g., train, cargo, ship) to save you time, frustration, and money.

However, to achieve these benefits, you do have to do custom pallets the right way, with a reputable manufacturer/supplier, in order to have a great experience.

Why choose Sonoco for sustainable custom pallets?

You don’t want to work with just any pallet supplier on your custom pallet solution. Having the wrong size of custom pallet isn’t very different from having the wrong size standard pallet, after all, and your correctly sized custom pallets still need to be high quality.
